Ennis Scores Unanimous Decision over Ashanti
Derek “Pooh” Ennis’ highly-anticipated return to the ring came far away from his hometown of Philadelphia, as he took to the ring with the formidable vet Shakir Ashanti (16-11, 4KOs) at the Coliseum Pavilion in North Carolina.
Pooh, newly refocused and in impressive condition, blasted out of his corner with trademark speed and established his rhythm with snappy jabs and precision right hands. In round three, Ennis’ momentum caused Ashanti’s defense to falter, and the former USBA champ surged and hammered the head and torso of his opponent who was now trapped on the ropes. Another 3o seconds would have seen a 3rd round stoppage, but Ashanti managed to hold on long enough to escape at the bell.
Pooh, sensing his advantage and confident in his conditioning, smartly outboxed Ashanti for the next several rounds. His elusiveness and quick-strike ability were on full showcase, as he strongly closed out the fight and collected his 23rd victory.
Moz Gonzalez, half of Battlestrong’s management contingency, had this to say about the win, “We were very happy with Derek’s performance. We are going to close out this year gunning for bigger and better opponents in the junior middleweight division; Pooh is ready, he looked strong and fast tonight, and mentally he’s ready for world contention.”
When asked when we would see Pooh in the ring again, Moz answered quickly, “as soon as possible. He’s walking out of this fight and right back into the gym.”
